Orphan Train of Memories BOM - class 10 of 10

image

Time: 10:00am to 1:00pm

Teacher: Jackie Roberts

This BOM is inspired from the Orphan Train movement, which began in 1854 and ended in 1929.  An estimated 200,000+ orphaned, abandoned and homeless children were placed out from New York City by train and sent to rural communities in 48 states and Canada in search of new parents and new homes.  The BOM tells the story of a woman named Helen who travels as an agent on the trains. She helps the children get adopted, and follows up yearly with the children and their new families.  The BOM quilt is designed to represent how the many children all had a common bond and a story to tell.  Taking the many pieces and creating a whole quilt is a way to tell that story.  Each fabric piece is representative of a child, and when pieced together, they create a bond, making them a part of something much larger—a family.  We will have a movie night with popcorn for all quilters who sign up for this class.  See Wednesday, Sept. 28th.  Barb has read the book…very moving- certainly touches your heart!  We are using the exact fabrics from RJR that the patterns were created for. Kits available.

Time: 6:00pm to 9:00pm

Teacher: Barb Miller

If you start this 42” x 42” wallhanging designed by Buttermilk Basin now, you will have it completed in

presents, ornaments, etc?  (Barb fell in love with this pattern after she saw a customer working on it in
one of the Sew Along days.)  It will be completed with fusible machine applique.  Barb is using the blanket stitch
and zig zag stitch.  Don’t shy away from this technique if it is new to you.  You will become a master at it.
The blocks finish at 12”.  Kit Available.  Daytimers: Barb’s responsibilities will end at 1:00, but you can stay
the remainder of the day to sew if you wish.

Time: 6:00pm to 9:00pm

Teacher: Barb Miller

Four Wednesdays: June 21st, July 19th, Aug. 16th, Sept. 13th, 6:00 - 9:00
Barb has many fond memories of her mom making “oodles and oodles” of hexi’s for a Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt.
After her dad was retired, her mom and dad would sit out under a tree in the side yard many summer evenings.  Her mom
had to keep her hands busy, so she made hexi’s for the quilt. Barb will demo the process She loves preparing hexi’s with
a starch brush and mini iron. They are perfect every time. After we make some in class, maybe we can go outside, weather
permitting, sit under the trees and do our handwork. You don’t suppose there will be alot of talking going on, do you? You don’t
have to make a quilt, it can be a tabletopper, pillow, really any size you want.  Great way to use up scraps! This is an English Paper Piecing technique.

Time: 2:00pm to 5:00pm

Fee: $0.00

Many of you bought the Unseen Hands Cathedral Window Quilt pattern with the 9” pressing template at the
Schoolhouse last June and have asked for a class. (We have more for sale if you did not buy one in June.) Barb
has always wanted to make a traditional Cathedral Window Quilt, so here’s the plan: She will demo the pressing
template and the technique used to make the Cathedral Window blocks - this particular method uses your
sewing machine - but you certainly could sew it by hand if you choose.
Barb will be sewing too! (It will give her some dedicated sewing time to get something done!)
You can make a pillow, any size quilt you want from baby to king, or a bed runner, or just some blocks.
If you want this class to continue on after June, that can be done too!  This will be a free class,
but a $20 refundable deposit will be required at signup to insure you a seat in the class.
Daytimers: Barb’s responsibilities will end at 1:00, but you can stay the remainder of the day to sew if you wish.)

Class Fee: FREE,  but $20 refundable deposit
