About Us

How it all began

imageAfter retiring from teaching school, I decided to invest in a longarm quilting machine, as I knew I couldn’t be idle, and start up a longarm quilting business based in the basement of my home. After a few months, I found that I missed the teaching aspect of my job and decided to offer a few classes to quilters in the community. It wasn’t long before my new quilting students were saying how nice it would be to have fabric, notions and other quilting supplies available when they came to class. They encouraged me to attempt something I had only dreamed of doing - opening my own full-service quilt shop. It wasn’t long before I had convinced my husband to convert our 2-car garage into a small quilt shop. Within one year, reality hit…I realized I needed to accommodate my growing customer base and built an expansion that tripled our size! That is how Mt. Pleasant Quilting Company became the shop it is today.

My business philosophy encompasses many things. I provide quality fabrics and the newest notions/quilting gadgets (as well as tried and true favorites) to my customers. It is also my goal to offer quilting classes to all levels of quilters in order to foster and pass on my love of quilting. Superior customer service has always been very important to me as a shop owner. Last but not least, I remind myself never to lose sight of what it was like to be the “consumer” instead of the owner and to provide my customers with things I looked for, had fun with and enjoyed in a quilt shop when I was on the other side of the counter.

Who visits our shop

I’m not sure I can describe our “average” customer. We like to think we appeal to quilters of all age levels and abilities. Because we are a destination shop, we see people from all over! Most of our customers are from the western New York area, but we have had customers from all over the country and even a few from overseas visit our shop. When a customer walks in the door, I first and foremost want them to feel comfortable and relaxed. I want to help them find what they need to finish their next quilting project. I want them to feel comfortable asking for help (no such thing as a dumb question!) If a customer just wants to browse leisurely without anyone bothering them, we can do that too! Certainly, when any customer walks out the door, I want them to say, “I’ll definitely shop here again!”
